Sinai monastery's status as a Greek Orthodox and pilgrimage site must be preserved, PM says
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday spoke on the phone with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Government sources said that they discussed the latest developments concerning the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai, following a recent ruling regarding its ownership made by the Egyptian courts. The same sources said that the Prime Minister underlined the importance of preserving the monastery's status as a Greek Orthodox site of pilgrimage and of resolving the issue through institutional means. The two leaders agreed that the solution lies in the already documented mutual understanding between the two sides, as well as in what had been agreed upon privately and was then publicly announced during the Egyptian president's visit to Athens on May 7.
